What's Happened So Far at BoG
The Spring 2023 semester here at Bits of Good has been ramping up! Sprint 3 is right around the corner, but let's recap everything that's happened since the new year started :) In January, we had an amazing Launch Party to welcome all the new members and introduced two new special nonprofits: Heart of Passion and Angels Among Us! Additionally, we had a blast at our Liftoff events where we flexed our artistic abilities making bracelets and painting, sweetened up our resumes and taste buds at the ice cream social, enjoyed the beautiful outdoors in Vickery Creek, and battled it out in a good old-fashioned game night. We are excited to see the amazing products that our project teams create this semester and we're eager to see what's in store as Demo Day rolls around!
Project Spotlight
Angels Among Us
Angels Among Us saves as many animals as they can from shelters and owner surrenders, and is there along every step of the process, from the actual rescue freedom ride to finding each animal a loving foster home. They are also focused on raising awareness to educate the public on all the animals that have found themselves in Georgia’s shelters or have suffered the neglect or abuse of pet ownership. In order to match volunteers with an animal, Angels Among Us communicates with volunteers via Facebook and mailing lists, but they lack one centralized platform to streamline the fostering process with volunteers. By developing a foster-matching mobile app, Bits of Good is helping Angels Among Us reach more volunteers more efficiently. In turn, Bits of Good will be directly impacting the abandoned or abused animals throughout Georgia.
Heart of Passion
Heart of Passion is a nonprofit started in the 2000’s by a past Georgia Tech student. Teens living with cancer often do not have the same support structure as younger children or older adults facing a similar situation. Heart of Passion connects teens living with cancer to each other to form an emotional support structure in an environment that only teens themselves could create. Each chapter of Heart of Passion organizes a summer retreat for these teens, but they an automated budgeting system to track what donations are used for. By developing an automated budgeting interface, Bits of Good is helping Heart of Passion optimize organizing and allocating donations. In turn, Bits of Good will be directly impacting the teens and their families.
